Trenchless International — October 2009

In Australia and New Zealand the use of various trenchless techniques has developed over almost forty years. Conventional pipe-cracking, or pipe-bursting, and horizontal boring techniques for new infrastructure installations have had a considerable history and success; and pipe rehabilitation and renovation has been in use for over thirty years in the region.

The scope of the industry is significant: there is an enormous investment in infrastructure associated with small diameter cables, conduits and pipelines.

In this feature we review important water and wastewater projects using microtunnelling to achieve water security in the Australian state of Victoria. We also look at the development of the trenchless industry in Australasia and the ASTT Chairman’s plans for the future. The Australasia wrap-up also reports on a pipe bursting project in New Zealand and includes a brief history of innovative Australian relining company, Rib Loc.

Trenchless Australasia 2009, the 8th National ASTT Conference and Exhibition takes place at Melbourne Park, in Melbourne, Victoria from 20–22 September 2009.
