Coon Rapids, Minnesota, is about to embark on a million dollar overhaul of its sewer system.
The city council has recently approved plans for the next phase of its sewer relining project, with repairs scheduled for 2010 worth $US1.59 million.
The city-wide sewer rehabilitation began in 2008, after CCTV inspection of the sewer system, which dates from the 1960s, revealed the existence of open joints and significant root intrusion.
In 2009, SEH Inc was contracted to provide engineering services on the latest phase of the project, and the city council will now advertise for bids.

The project will be funded by the Sanitary Sewer Utility Fund, which derives revenue from quarterly utility bills.
Meanwhile, the city of Richmond, Virginia, has renewed a $US8.1 million contract for the rehabilitation of its sewer system.
This is the third of a five-year renewable contract with Insituform Technologies, who will be responsible for rehabilitating wastewater pipelines in Richmond using CIPP. CCTV pipe inspection and manhole rehabilitation will also be carried out by local subcontractors.
Work on the project is scheduled to begin in late May.
Finally, the Metropolitan St Louis Sewer District is about to begin a $US4.9 million rehabilitation of sewers in the district of Webster Groves.
Insituform Technologies has been awarded the contract for the project, and will use CIPP to reline 24 km of sewer pipe, 8–30 inches in diameter.
The St Louis Sanitary Sewer Replacement Fund will finance the repairs, which are intended to reduce inflow and infiltration, and address long-term sewer trunk capacity.
Construction work will begin in May, and is scheduled to be completed by June 2011.
